18-year-old driver may have caused 1 of Michigan's car accidents

When a car crash occurs in Michigan, its cause may not always be evident. Car accidents may leave more questions than answers, but law enforcement will work tirelessly to determine what happened and file charges against anyone believed to have violated the law. A recent area car crash that took the life of one man and injured several others still has police working to determine the circumstances, but they may have an explanation soon.

Officials say that an 18-year-old man was driving on a recent late evening when his car drifted into the oncoming lane for an unknown reason. They say that he struck another vehicle head-on, resulting in the driver’s death on-scene. Five people are still receiving treatment at a local hospital, in addition to the driver who is said to have strayed into oncoming traffic. He is listed in stable condition.

Police have not released any details about what they believe might have caused the accident. They do say that they believe alcohol was not a factor in the crash. The road where the incident occurred was closed for a period of time after the crash but has since been reopened. At this time, police have not announced any plans to file any criminal charges.?

Even if Michigan police do not decide to press any charges against the 18-year-old driver, he could face civil suits from the family of the man who died and/or any of the injured victims. A suit of that nature -- if driver negligence is established by appropriate proof -- could result in financial restitution that could help families cover funeral expenses, unpaid medical bills or other costs. Car accidents like this one can have dire consequences for those who lose loved ones, and a civil legal claim is often an effective way to hold responsible parties accountable.
