DUI car accidents far too common in Michigan

Any fatal car accident is tragic enough on its own. Those who are unfortunate enough to have lost loved ones in car accidents have their worlds completely shattered and must attempt to pick up the pieces after suffering such a terrible loss. That loss is only amplified when the accident was completely preventable. Recently, several Michigan residents were compelled to recount a devastating crash and its aftereffects that were caused by a motorist who allegedly chose to drive under the influence.

The accident happened last year. Police say that it was caused by a young female driver who had traces of several drugs in her system and was in possession of alcohol at the scene. Two men were killed in the collision and the trial of the driver is now underway. She faces several charges, including second-degree murder and other charges relating to her drug use. It was also discovered that she was driving on a suspended license.

First responders who testified at the trial said that one of the men was dead by the time they arrived and their best efforts could not save the other man. A deputy from the local sheriff's office was the one who reportedly discovered that the driver was intoxicated. After the findings from this crash, blood samples from this same driver that had accumulated from other incidents were rushed to testing. All of those samples came back with positive results for drugs.

The families of the two men who died here in Michigan are undoubtedly heartbroken over their loss. The crash should not have happened and it is now up to the criminal courts to decide the fate of the woman accused of causing it. The families may decide to pursue a civil claim against this woman, no matter the outcome of her trial. A claim that relates to car accidents like this could be used to recoup any financial losses the family may be contending with as a result of the deaths of the men. Hopefully, it would bring anyone in a similar situation a sense of peace and a feeling that justice had been served.
