Distracted driving can cause fatal Michigan car accidents

Car crashes happen for a variety of reasons. Some of these causes may be out of the control of the drivers involved, but many times there is a clear action on the part of at least one of the drivers that led to the incident. A recent crash here in Michigan may prove to be an example of preventable car accidents.

The collision happened in the evening when a young woman was driving alone. A car that approached from the other direction veered over the center line and struck her vehicle. The woman died at the crash site before she could be transported for medical attention. The male driver who is accused of causing the accident was rushed to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not serious.

Police say that the man was allegedly distracted, which caused him to swerve into the opposite lane. They believe that the driver was using his mobile phone and may have consumed alcohol prior to the collision. Authorities have not clarified whether there will be criminal charges filed against the man relating to this accident.

The family of the young woman here in Michigan likely has the right to file a wrongful death claim in civil court against the man who might have caused the crash. If a claim of that type were successful, it may be a way for the family to obtain financial compensation for their tragic loss. Distracted driving is an easily preventable reason for car accidents to occur, and families should not fear bringing those responsible to civil as well as criminal justice.
