Michigan motorcycle accidents can be fatal without helmets

Many young people in the prime of their lives forget basic safety rules. Their excitement and adrenaline take over and might cause them to take risks they otherwise wouldn't take. This could explain what happened in a recent motorcycle crash here in Michigan that took the lives of three young adults and injured another. Motorcycle accidents like this involving young people can quickly become fatal.

The accident happened late at night in southeastern Michigan. Two people were riding on a dirt bike when it veered into the path of an oncoming motorcycle carrying two other people. The crash caused everyone to be thrown from the bikes and the young male drivers both died at the scene. Their passengers were both women -- one of them died at a local hospital and the other remains in serious condition.

Authorities have reason to believe that the young men were not wearing helmets at the time of the accident, but the women were. They are still investigating the incident and have not announced if there were any contributing factors such as drugs, alcohol or excessive speed. They also have not officially stated who they believe is at fault for the accident.

Depending on which driver is ultimately determined to be at fault for this crash, the surviving families of the victims may decide to make a civil claim here in Michigan against the estate of the deceased driver believed to be negligent. If a claim were successful in this instance, it could result in financial compensation being awarded to the surviving family for any costs that have likely resulted from this tragedy. Motorcycle accidents like this one are devastating, and families deserve to know their options.
