Woman seriously injured after reckless driver strikes motorcycle

While the following motorcycle accident did not happen here in Detroit, Michigan, the point it illustrates is important to anyone in the country.

A woman who was recently riding her motorcycle was struck by a 21-year-old man driving his vehicle. The crash caused the woman to suffer serious injuries. The man made a cowardly and illegal decision after the crash: he tried to flee the scene. Once caught, the police charged him with a number of criminal acts, including "failure to stop at an accident" and "reckless driving." The man will return to court later in the month, and he could be sentenced to 10 years in jail, given the charges that are being brought against him.

Other than that, nothing is known about the accident. Clearly this man was driving in a dangerous fashion, and he wrongfully put the motorcyclist's life in danger as a result. That's the unfortunate reality for motorcycle accidents: the motorcyclist is very vulnerable, more so than almost any other vehicle on the road. When they get into an accident, it is rare for them to walk away with only a scrape here and a bump there. Usually it's broken bones, terrible abrasions and internal injuries. The pain and suffering is immense -- and the rider, if harmed due to the negligence of another driver, could seek civil litigation.

Negligence is common in these types of accidents, too. A driver either fails to check his or her mirrors or blind spots, and bam -- an accident can occur. Yes, motorcyclists are tougher to see than other vehicles. But that doesn't mean you just dismiss them. They have a right to the road just like any other vehicle.
